Every day Citizen Schools is working with thousands of students to bring learning to life through hands on learning to communities that really need it. This year I'm racing this year to support these apprenticeships. I need your help to do so!

In 2009 I met Dejuan. A 6th grader at First Ave Elementary, he had a magnetic personality, always had a group of kids around him, and was a joy to be around. He was also not doing really well in his math class.

We had a game plan to improve that performance. The key to this plan was making math real for him through a semester-long apprenticeship. Parsons School of Design was working on a downtown Newark mixed use development. They partnered with Citizen Schools' to engage 10 middle school students in this project.

Dejuan's group was challenged to build a scaled model of what they thought the development should look like to meet the community's needs. On the second day, they went to the empty site and walked around with measuring tape. At realizing that the space was too large to measure, Dejuan also realized that in order to build a reliable model, he had to use fractions. This was his first time tying together why he needed fractions.

Over the 13 week window, his group built a variety of designs, learned about the education pathways necessary to excel in this work, strengthened their 21st century skills of creativity and innovation, and presented their models to their families and community members at an end of semester celebration of student learning (called a WOW!)

We also saw a meaningful improvement in his math class. This was because, for the first time, he got why he was doing math. He could see and touch why it was relevant. He knew how he could use it currently and in his future. He had a deeper understanding of why he needed to learn now.

I will be doing 3-4 triathlons this season and raising funds so that more students across the US have access to experiences that will make learning real and relevant for them. The first one is planned for July 13th in Ellensburg, WA (Ellensburg Olympic Triathlon). I'll continue to update this as the season progresses, but have an ask for you:

Will consider making a donation to support this as well. Together we can make a difference!
